Most of us are
captivated by all things that are new, but
Russell is drawn to those items that most of
us have long discarded. He sees their
beauty, their use, and their potential.
Through his photographic techniques, these
objects are taken to a new dimension where
life is rediscovered.
Russell's work begins with finding
interesting, old, and used objects. Each of
these objects comes with the imprint of the
user, who has left it scratched, marked, and
weathered. He deliberately heightens and
highlights these flaws and characteristics,
edging towards the hyper-real. His work is
not difficult to understand. Yes, it may be
contrived, but it also leaves you with the
sense that it is genuine and authentic in
its interpretation. His images provoke
powerful memories and are easily
recognisable in their familiarity.
Russell has always had a love of things and
how they work, often found dismantling toys
as a young boy. Throughout secondary and
tertiary studies, he was able to combine his
artistic and technical abilities. With a
background in design and manufacturing,
Russell has a real sensibility when it comes
to how people use and relate to objects.
With an instinct for point of view and
natural composition, he leaves the viewer
with a distinct impression of the life that
the object once lived. He brings life and
atmosphere to what is otherwise considered
lifeless. He has successfully developed a
unique style, working meticulously to
produce strong, three-dimensional and
textural characteristics that can only be
truly appreciated when seen in print.
